• What is Palliative Care?

The World Health Organisation defines Palliative Care as:
An approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families
facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering

Who is Palliative Care for?

Palliative Care is for people living with a chronic or terminal illness where a cure is not possible. It's for people of all ages that have a terminal condition.
It can also help people who have a complex illness and need their symptoms controlled. Although these people usually have a chronic or degenerative disease, this isn’t always the case.

Geelong Palliative Care Group aims to manage pain and treat physical symptoms to help people live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible. Though Palliative Care often involves medicine, therapy, and other specialist support, our main aim is
caring for people. People who are nearing the end of their life or suffering from a life-limiting or chronic ongoing illness.

We understand that you may be from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, or your community may have unique views, understandings and traditions about the end of life, grief and bereavement. Geelong Palliative Care Group can provide care that is culturally appropriate for you.

The Geelong Palliative Care Group Teams are specialists who work together with you and your family. We provide an extra layer of support when you need it most. In addition to managing pain and treating symptoms, we offer professional advice and emotional assistance. We can help you with grief and bereavement support for you, your family and your friends. We support you every step of the way.

Where is palliative care provided?

Palliative care is provided where the person and their family wants, where possible.
Many people indicate a preference to die at home and making this possible often depends on several factors, including:

  • The nature of the illness and amount of care the person needs
  • How much support is available from family and friends
  • If the person has someone at home who can provide physical care and support

Over 150,000 people die each year in Australia

That means families and friends experience one death every 3 minutes and 17 seconds.
